Traditional Leadership

Mayegun of Egbaland

Chief Shina Luwoye

Serving Culture. Preserving Heritage. Advancing Development.

The Office

A solemn covenant

to serve

For Chief Shina Luwoye, the title is not the culmination of a distinguished journey, but a solemn covenant to serve.

The conferment of the title of Mayegun of Egbaland upon Chief Shina Luwoye by the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, the Okukenu IV, is far more than a traditional honour. It is a solemn call to service, leadership and responsibility within one of Nigeria’s most revered traditional institutions.

Egbaland occupies a distinguished place in the history of the Yoruba people. Following the establishment of Abeokuta in the nineteenth century, the Egba traditional institution evolved into a sophisticated system of governance built on leadership, consultation, public service and communal responsibility.

Within this historic structure, the title of Mayegun occupies an honoured place among the recognised traditional chieftaincy titles. Historically associated with courage, leadership and distinguished public service, it is bestowed upon individuals whose personal achievements are matched by a total commitment to the advancement of society.

The office therefore stands as a bridge between heritage and progress — strengthening institutions, promoting education, encouraging enterprise, supporting young people and preserving the cultural values that have sustained Egbaland across generations.

Legacy of Service

Measured by the lives it touches

For Chief Shina Luwoye, the office of the Mayegun provides a platform to honour a sacred trust — preserving the rich cultural heritage of the Egba people while championing initiatives that expand educational opportunities and prepare future generations for greater possibilities.

Every community engagement, educational intervention, cultural programme and strategic partnership undertaken through this office contributes to a larger vision: an Egbaland where heritage remains vibrant, institutions remain strong and every generation inherits a society better than the one before it.

In Egbaland, traditional titles are not ornaments of prestige. They are sacred trusts, bestowed in recognition of character, service and a total commitment to the common good.
